Musharaf won the heart of the nation when the story of his attempts to overcome his stammer was featured on the BAFTA- and Emmy Award-winning documentary series Educating Yorkshire on Channel 4. In his final school assembly Musharaf stood up and spoke in public for the first time, reducing teachers, fellow students and viewers at home to tears. The footage quickly went viral with over 7m views on youtube alone. So popular did the series become because of this that a follow-up Christmas Special was commissioned to catch up on Musharaf and his classmates. In 2014 Channel 4 broadcast another documentary called Stammer School: Musharaf Finds His Voice following Musharaf as he attended the McGuire Programme to try to improve his stammer. This year he went on to melt hearts on Channel 4's Celebrity First Dates, once again showing the power of Musharaf! Inspired by the reaction to the programmes and the support he has received from fans all around the world Musharaf now acts as an ambassador for stammerers and gives motivational talks about his life and attempts to overcome his affliction. As a proud British Pakistani Muslim, Musharaf is also keen to encourage debate about race and identity.
